A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

A local author struggles to cope with tragedy while attempting to save a mysterious child.

 A short summary:

Thief River Falls centers on a novelist still reeling from personal tragedy who becomes unexpectedly entangled in the life of a mysterious child. What begins as an act of reluctant responsibility turns into something far darker, as danger closes in from multiple directions and nothing about the situation feels stable or safe.

As the story unfolds, Freeman deliberately withholds certainty. Motives are unclear, threats are misjudged, and survival feels temporary at best. The novel blends grief, guilt, and suspense into a narrative that constantly destabilizes the reader, forcing us to question what we think we understand right up to the final pages.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Writing is a mirror. If someone doesn't like what you write, maybe it's because they
don't like what they see in the reflection."

Questions to ponder while reading Thief River Falls:

How has tragedy affected you?

Do you support the Second Amendment?

My review of the book:

I was so confused.
I was certain she should have died, more than once.
And I was completely shocked by the ending.

This is not a comfortable thriller. Thief River Falls is disorienting by design, refusing to follow the expected rules of pacing, safety, or logic. Freeman leans hard into emotional instability, mirroring the protagonist’s fractured inner life.

The tension comes not just from external threats, but from the constant sense that something is off. The story keeps you questioning your assumptions about who is vulnerable, who is dangerous, and who can be trusted to survive.

The ending lands like a punch you don’t see coming. You may not like it—but you will remember it. This is a thriller that risks alienation in exchange for impact, and that risk pays off.
