A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
The secrets and sacrifices of Pino Lella's WWII service.
A short summary:
Beneath a Scarlet Sky tells the extraordinary true story of Pino Lella, an Italian teenager whose life is upended by World War II. As northern Italy falls under Nazi occupation, Pino becomes an unlikely courier for the Catholic underground, helping Jews escape across the Alps into Switzerland. Later, he is forced into the inner circle of a powerful Nazi commander, where his quiet courage and moral resolve place him in constant danger. Through Pino’s eyes, the novel reveals the complexity of survival, faith, and resistance in a war-torn Italy rarely centered in WWII narratives.
My favorite quote from the book:
"Life is change, constant change, and unless we are lucky enough to find comedy in it, change is nearly always a drama, if not a tragedy."
Pino Lella, Beneath a Scarlet Sky
Questions to ponder while reading:
What type of "service to one's enemies" is appropriate during a war?
How should one treat one's enemies?
My review of the book:
This was a completely absorbing read, made even more potent by its grounding in real events. Sullivan brings attention to the often-overlooked Italian front of World War II, showing that heroism there was frequently quiet, hidden, and morally complicated. I was especially struck by the role of the Catholic underground, whose courage and sacrifice deserve far wider recognition. While the story is filled with tension and heartbreak, it is ultimately a testament to resilience, conscience, and the extraordinary impact of ordinary people choosing to do what is right in impossible circumstances.
