A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

A legal mind copes with the closeness of a copycat killer.

A short summary:

A Killer’s Wife follows a successful defense attorney whose carefully ordered life is shattered when a copycat killer begins operating disturbingly close to home. As the crimes escalate, the boundary between professional expertise and personal vulnerability begins to blur.

The novel explores how proximity to violence reshapes trust, within marriages, within institutions, and within one’s own sense of certainty. Methos builds tension not just through the murders themselves, but through the creeping realization that knowledge can be a liability when the truth hits too close.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Hindsight has the power to make us feel like fools."
- Victor Methos, A Killer's Wife

Questions to ponder while reading:

Why, as a species, are we so cruel to each other?

Would you ever be able to date again?

My review:

Such an unexpectedly fun thriller.
I couldn’t put it down.
And it leaves you deeply unsettled in hindsight.

What makes A Killer’s Wife work so well is its pace; it moves fast without feeling hollow. Methos understands escalation, constantly tightening the screws while keeping the story grounded in character rather than spectacle.

The most effective tension comes from familiarity. The fear isn’t rooted in a faceless monster, but in the uncomfortable question of how well we truly know the people closest to us. The legal framing adds credibility, while the emotional fallout keeps the stakes human.

This is a thriller that entertains first, but lingers longer than expected.
