A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover and review graphic for The Battle of Hillsboro by Jesse S. Smith, an indie novel about rebellion and chaos.
"Hey, what do you want to do tonight?"

"I dunno man, take over the world or something."

A short summary:

What starts as a casual, almost joking question, “Hey, what do you want to do tonight?” quickly spirals into something far bigger, messier, and more dangerous. Set against a backdrop of restless youth and simmering ambition, The Battle of Hillsboro follows characters who aren’t content to drift quietly through life.

Fueled by bravado, frustration, and the intoxicating pull of chaos, the story escalates from idle talk into reckless action. What unfolds is less a traditional plot than a collision of impulse and consequence, capturing the moment when boredom curdles into rebellion.

My favorite quote from the book:

"I didn't set out to be a bad person."

Questions to ponder while reading the book:

Quoting F. Scott Fitzgerald - What does one do with oneself when one has nothing to do?

Is a bloodless revolution possible?

My review:

A fun, fast read.

This is a fun, fast-moving read with real indie personality.

Jesse S. Smith blends raw energy and disaffected youth in a way that feels familiar yet fresh. The novel carries echoes of The Outsiders, The Beautiful and the Damned, and Fight Clubnot as imitation, but as shared mood: restless, volatile, and edged with self-destruction.

The pacing is quick, the tone unapologetic, and the story thrives on vibe as much as narrative. It doesn’t over-explain itself, and it doesn’t try to be tidy. Instead, it leans into momentum and attitude, trusting the reader to follow along.

A strong indie author discoveryfast, chaotic, and entertaining.
