Zoo - James Patterson - A Short Summary and Review

A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover and review graphic for Zoo by James Patterson, a fast-paced thriller about rising animal attacks worldwide.
What happens to the world when the "frequency of animal attacks" increases?

A short summary:

Across the globe, reports of animal attacks begin to spike, first as isolated incidents, then as a terrifying pattern. Lions turn on trainers, pets become unpredictable, and animals once considered harmless behave with calculated aggression. What initially appears to be a coincidence soon suggests something far more disturbing.

As scientists and investigators scramble to understand the cause, the world teeters on the edge of ecological chaos. Zoo transforms humanity’s comfortable dominance over nature into a liability, asking what happens when the balance decisively shifts, and people are no longer at the top of the food chain.

My favorite quote from the book:

"A problem ain't a problem until it happens in DC."
- James Patterson, Zoo

Quote from Zoo by James Patterson reading “A problem ain’t a problem until it happens in DC,” set against a red-toned background.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do you have pets?

How attached are you to your cell phone?

My review:

This is fast-paced, high-concept fun.

James Patterson delivers exactly what he does best here: short chapters, escalating stakes, and a premise that propels you forward without asking you to slow down and overthink it. Zoo is less about scientific plausibility and more about momentum.

It’s smart enough to be unsettling but light enough to be entertaining. The idea of animals acting in coordinated, hostile ways taps into a very modern anxiety: our dependence on technology, our distance from nature, and our assumption of control.

A perfect piece of literary brain candy.
And yes—it definitely made me think about reducing my screen time.
