A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book review graphic for In the Distance by Hernan Diaz featuring the book cover and text introducing a short summary and review.
A Swedish hawk's tale of loneliness in the American West.

A short summary:

In the Distance follows Håkan Söderström, a young Swedish immigrant who becomes separated from his brother upon arriving in America and spends years wandering westward in an attempt to reunite with him. Moving through the harsh landscapes of the American frontier, Håkan survives through isolation, misunderstanding, and violence, gradually becoming a near-mythic figure despite his desire for nothing more than human connection. The novel is a quiet, devastating meditation on displacement, endurance, and the emotional cost of survival in a land that offers opportunity without mercy.

My favorite quote from the book:

"A year and an instant are equivalent in a monotonous life."
Hernan Diaz, In the Distance

Quote from In the Distance by Hernan Diaz over a western landscape with a bison, reflecting on loneliness and the passage of time.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Could you have gone on alone?

Do you believe every story you hear?

My thoughts:

This novel broke my heart. HÃ¥kan’s loneliness is profound and unrelenting, and Diaz does not soften the cruelty of the world he encounters. Life is unfair here; people are often brutal, and kindness feels rare and fleeting. As an introvert, I kept thinking that even I would have lost my mind in such complete isolation. In the Distance is slow, spare, and haunting,  not an easy read, but a deeply moving one that lingers long after the final page, asking what it truly means to survive when survival itself becomes a kind of exile.
