My thoughts:
This novel broke my heart. HÃ¥kan’s loneliness is profound and unrelenting, and Diaz does not soften the cruelty of the world he encounters. Life is unfair here; people are often brutal, and kindness feels rare and fleeting. As an introvert, I kept thinking that even I would have lost my mind in such complete isolation. In the Distance is slow, spare, and haunting, not an easy read, but a deeply moving one that lingers long after the final page, asking what it truly means to survive when survival itself becomes a kind of exile.
