A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover of Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt by Anne Rice displayed over a desert landscape with the title “A Short Summary & Review.”
A short tale about a young boy named Jesus.

A short summary:

Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt imagines the hidden years of Jesus’ childhood, focusing on a young boy growing in awareness of the world, his family, and his own identity. Told from a deeply human perspective, the novel explores curiosity, compassion, and the gradual awakening to truths too large for any child to fully understand. Anne Rice grounds the sacred story in daily life, family bonds, fear, wonder, and belonging, allowing readers to approach the mystery of Christ not through doctrine, but through lived experience.

My favorite quote from the book:

"I was sent here to be alive. To breathe and sweat and thirst and sometimes cry."
- Anne Rice, Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt

Quote by Anne Rice over a quiet coastal landscape reading, “I was sent here to be alive. To breathe and sweat and thirst and sometimes cry.”

Questions to ponder while reading:

How much should young children know?

How would you feel?

My review:

I was genuinely surprised by how tender and restrained this book felt. Anne Rice portrays Jesus as a thoughtful, empathetic, and observant child, clearly different, yet still deeply human. The emotional weight builds quietly as awareness dawns, leaving the reader to sit with the ache of knowing that innocence will not last forever. I was especially struck by the idea of a child slowly realizing the burden he must carry; it’s devastating, intimate, and handled with grace. This is a contemplative novel that invites reflection rather than certainty, and I appreciated that deeply.
