A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
Evelyn, After follows Evelyn Tester, a woman rebuilding her life in the wake of her marriage’s collapse. After years spent compromising and accommodating, Evelyn finds herself facing betrayal, humiliation, and a new reality she never anticipated.
As she navigates dating, temptation, revenge fantasies, and her own wounded pride, Evelyn confronts the choices that led her here. The novel moves beyond simple heartbreak into questions of agency, dignity, and personal reinvention. It examines how easily resentment can masquerade as empowerment, and how difficult it can be to choose growth instead.

My review:
This is not a gentle divorce story. It is sharp, uncomfortable, and occasionally frustrating, intentionally so.
Some characters behave selfishly and destructively, with little moral reflection. That discomfort feels realistic rather than exaggerated. The novel does not pretend that betrayal inspires immediate enlightenment. Instead, it explores the messy space between hurt and healing.
One of the strongest undercurrents in the book is the futility of retaliation. Retaliatory affairs, impulsive decisions, and emotional scoring rarely bring the closure imagined. The story quietly argues that revenge prolongs entanglement rather than severing it.
Ultimately, the most resonant message is about self-worth. Learning to love oneself is not glamorous work. It requires confronting insecurity, habit, and the temptation to define identity through someone else’s rejection.
Evelyn, After reads quickly, but its emotional themes linger. It asks readers to consider where empowerment ends and self-sabotage begins.
