Searching for artistic answers in the history of the Spanish Inquisition

A short summary:

The Sisterhood follows a young woman as she searches for artistic and spiritual meaning through the layered history of the Spanish Inquisition. Drawn into a secretive circle of women bound by art, faith, and resistance, she discovers that creativity can be both a refuge and a form of rebellion.

Set against the charged religious and political tensions of medieval Spain, the novel weaves historical intrigue with personal awakening. As the past unfolds through hidden records and guarded traditions, the story explores how belief, power, and art collide, and how women have quietly preserved truth even under persecution.

My favorite quote from the book:

"The world had enough trouble without insisting all worship God in the same way."
- Helen Bryan, The Sisterhood

Quote by Helen Bryan about religious worship displayed over a stone corridor setting reminiscent of medieval Spain.

Questions to ponder while reading:

What do you think of coincidences?

How much of the distant past directs our lives today?

My review:

This was simply fun to read. It’s rich with Spanish history, secret societies, and artistic mystery, exactly the kind of historical fiction that keeps you turning pages without asking too much of you.

What I enjoyed most was how the novel uses history as atmosphere rather than homework. You absorb the complexities of the Spanish Inquisition almost accidentally, carried along by intrigue and discovery rather than weighed down by exposition.

The Sisterhood is unapologetic brain candy, but smart brain candy. It’s entertaining, informative, and engaging in that rare way that makes historical fiction feel accessible instead of intimidating. A great pick when you want history with momentum.
