A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

A rural church scene featuring the book cover of Diary of a Country Priest by Georges Bernanos with text reading “A Short Summary & Review.”

A country parish helps a priest on his journey toward humility.

A short summary:

In Diary of a Country Priest, Georges Bernanos tells the story of a young, physically frail priest assigned to a small rural parish. Through his private journal, we witness the daily, often invisible struggles of pastoral life,  misunderstanding, isolation, illness, spiritual dryness, and quiet acts of faith that go largely unnoticed.

The parish itself becomes both setting and teacher, pressing the priest toward humility rather than success, endurance rather than recognition. His journey is not one of outward triumph, but of interior surrender, as he learns to serve faithfully without reassurance, clarity, or comfort.

This is not a story about solving problems or winning souls, but about remaining present, to God, to others, and to one’s own limitations.

My favorite quote from the book:

"The wish to pray is a prayer in itself."
- Georges Bernanos, The Diary of A Country Priest

A small white country church among bare trees with the quote, “The wish to pray is a prayer in itself,” by Georges Bernanos.

 Questions to ponder while reading:

Do your expectations meet reality?

Are you awkward?

My review:

This is a deeply touching and often painful novel about the cost of service. I felt profound sympathy for the young priest, whose sincerity and vulnerability expose just how lonely and difficult faithful obedience can be.

Bernanos does not romanticize the priesthood or spiritual life. Instead, he shows how grace often unfolds in obscurity, misunderstanding, and apparent failure. The priest’s perseverance,  gentle, wounded, and uncelebrated, raises uncomfortable questions about strength, endurance, and what it truly means to serve well.

Reading this book, I found myself wondering whether I could have continued with such quiet grace in the face of constant discouragement. Diary of a Country Priest lingers long after the final page, offering a humbling portrait of sanctity shaped not by success, but by fidelity.
