A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover of The Unmissing by Minka Kent shown beside text reading “A Short Summary & Review” over a dark cabin-in-the-woods background.
A dead ex-wife returns to her husband's life to haunt him and his new wife.

A short summary of Unmissing:

The Unmissing begins with an unsettling return: a woman long believed dead suddenly reappears, forcing her ex-husband and his new wife to confront a past they thought was buried. What follows is a tense psychological unraveling as old wounds reopen and carefully curated lives begin to crack.

As perspectives shift and motivations blur, the novel explores how obsession, resentment, and unresolved trauma can distort truth. The question isn’t just why she came back, but what she intends to take with her.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Monsters aren't supposed to get happy endings."
-Minka Kent, Unmissing

Questions to ponder while reading:

How well do you know your spouse?

Why not just go to the police?

My review:

This is a fun, engaging psychological thriller with a clever central twist that keeps the story moving briskly. The premise is immediately intriguing, and the narrative sustains tension as it slowly reveals the emotional fault lines among its characters.

While the plot is compelling, the novel leans heavily into themes of wealth, status, and material comfort, sometimes to the point of distraction. That emphasis occasionally pulled me out of the story, even as the suspense remained strong.

Still, The Unmissing delivers what it promises: an entertaining, twist-driven thriller with just enough psychological bite to make it memorable. It’s a solid choice for readers who enjoy domestic suspense with sharp turns and morally complicated characters.
