A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

The life and times of the lonely Daisy Goodwill.

A short summary:

The Stone Diaries traces the life of Daisy Goodwill Flett from birth to old age, assembling her story through fragments, memories, letters, and the observations of others. Daisy’s life is not marked by grand drama, but by the quiet accumulation of ordinary moments, marriage, motherhood, work, loss, and solitude.

Rather than presenting a single, authoritative narrative, the novel reflects on how a life is imperfectly and unevenly remembered. Daisy’s story unfolds as a mosaic, revealing how identity is shaped as much by silence and omission as by action.

My favorite quote from the book:

"There are chapters in every life which are seldom read and certainly not aloud."
- Carol Shields, The Stone Diaries

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do you feel loved?

Do you have the life you want?

My review of The Stone Diaries:

This is a deeply reflective novel filled with fascinating, individual stories that orbit around Daisy’s life. Each section introduces eccentric, memorable personalities whose perspectives enrich, and sometimes complicate, our understanding of her.

What struck me most was how relatable Daisy felt. Her loneliness, self-doubt, and sense of being slightly out of step with the world are rendered with gentle honesty rather than melodrama. Shields captures the interior life of an ordinary woman with extraordinary insight, making the small moments feel quietly monumental.

The Stone Diaries rewards patient readers with emotional resonance and wisdom. It’s a novel about being seen, or not seen, and about how a life can feel both entirely personal and strangely elusive, even to the person living it.
