A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover and review graphic for Have You Seen Luis Velez? by Catherine Ryan Hyde, a novel about an unlikely friendship between a teen and a blind Holocaust survivor.
An outcast provides caregiving during the search for a missing person.

A short summary:

Set in a New York City apartment building, Have You Seen Luis Velez? centers on an unlikely friendship between Raymond Jaffe, a lonely biracial teenager drifting through adolescence, and Mildred Gutermann, a 92-year-old blind woman and Holocaust survivor.

When Mildred’s trusted caretaker, Luis Velez, suddenly disappears, Raymond steps in to help her navigate daily life, and in doing so, becomes emotionally invested in finding Luis. What begins as an act of kindness turns into a journey of connection, responsibility, and self-discovery.

Rather than focusing on the mechanics of a missing-person search, the novel explores how isolation, prejudice, and fear shrink when people choose compassion. Through shared stories, mutual reliance, and quiet courage, Raymond and Mildred each find a sense of belonging they didn’t know they were missing.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Most of what you regret on this world is not of your own making."
- Catherine Ryan Hyde, Have You Seen Luis Velez

Quote from Have You Seen Luis Velez? by Catherine Ryan Hyde about regret, circumstance, and the forces beyond our control.

Questions to ponder while reading:

What motivates you to help others?

Do you feel like you belong?

My review:

This is a deeply heartwarming, quietly powerful novel.

Catherine Ryan Hyde excels at writing about people who exist on the margins, those made invisible by age, race, trauma, or circumstance, and showing how transformative a simple human connection can be. Raymond and Mildred’s relationship feels authentic, tender, and earned, never sentimental or forced.

I read this straight through in one sitting.

The story gently invites readers to ask difficult questions:

What causes crime?
What causes isolation?

And how often do we misunderstand one another simply because we’re afraid to look closer?

Ultimately, Have You Seen Luis Velez? is a novel about kindness as action, friendship as survival, and how unexpected connections can reshape who we believe ourselves to be.
