A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

An "expectant" snowbound murder mystery.

A short summary:

In the Barren Ground is a snowbound murder mystery that traps its characters, and its readers, in a brutal northern landscape. When a woman vanishes under suspicious circumstances, the investigation exposes secrets rooted in isolation, desperation, and long-standing grievances.

As the search intensifies, the story unfolds against a backdrop of cold that feels almost sentient. White uses the setting not just as atmosphere, but as an active force, compressing choices, sharpening motives, and ensuring that escape, emotional or physical, comes at a steep price.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Psychosis is rarely about logic."

Questions to ponder while reading:

How active should pregnant women be?

How do you cope with depression?

My review:

This one absolutely reminded me of Fargo, bleak, tense, and darkly compelling, plus, you know, pregnancy.

In the Barren Ground thrives on pressure. The snowbound setting eliminates easy exits, forcing every character to confront consequences head-on. The pacing is tight, the stakes escalate quickly, and the story never loses momentum.

What stands out is the balance: equal opportunity abounds here, meaning no one feels protected by convention or expectation. Everyone is vulnerable, and that uncertainty keeps the pages turning fast.

I couldn’t put it down. This is the kind of thriller that works best when read in long, uninterrupted stretches, preferably while the weather outside matches the mood.
