A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
Glory and the Lightning tells the life story of Aspasia of Miletus, a courtesan, intellectual, and one of the most influential women in ancient Greece. From her early life in Miletus to her rise in Athens, Aspasia moves through the highest political and philosophical circles of the classical world, forming relationships with statesmen, thinkers, and generals who shape the republic's future.
Through her lovers, alliances, and ambitions, the novel explores the mechanics of power in a democratic experiment still finding its footing. Aspasia’s story unfolds alongside debates about governance, citizenship, war, and the fragile nature of freedom, offering a ground-level view of how republics rise, strain, and threaten to collapse under their own ideals.

My review of the book:
This is historical fiction with intellectual heft. Taylor Caldwell is less interested in romance for its own sake than in using Aspasia’s life as a lens through which to examine politics, philosophy, and the responsibilities of citizenship.
The novel offers a compelling look at ancient Greek society, not as a marble ideal, but as a volatile mix of ego, brilliance, ambition, and contradiction. Its examination of democratic governance feels surprisingly contemporary, particularly in its questions about who is allowed power, who is silenced, and how easily ideals are compromised.
Caldwell’s prose is dense but absorbing, rewarding patient readers who enjoy immersive world-building and long-form political thought. This is a book to sink into rather than skim, a novel that invites reflection as much as engagement.
Glory and the Lightning is not light reading, but it is deeply satisfying. For readers interested in ancient history, political philosophy, or the foundations of republican government, it is an engrossing and thought-provoking experience.
