A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

The stories of a sociopath who solves crimes.

A short summary:

In The Complete Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle gathers the full canon of stories featuring his iconic consulting detective and the ever-steady Dr. John Watson. Set largely in Victorian and Edwardian London, these tales follow Holmes as he applies extraordinary powers of observation and deduction to crimes others find baffling or miss entirely.

Across murders, mysteries, and moral puzzles, Doyle builds a world where intellect is the sharpest tool, and reason is a form of courage. The stories are as much about the city and the era as they are about crime, capturing London’s fog, class tensions, and rhythms with remarkable vividness.

My favorite quote from the book:

"It is easy to be wise after the event."

Questions to ponder while reading:

Is logic always to be trusted?

Does being gifted also come with mental illness?

My review:

The Complete Sherlock Holmes is endlessly rereadable. Holmes himself is, by modern standards, something of a sociopath—aloof, obsessive, emotionally detached, but that very singularity fuels the brilliance of the stories. He notices what others overlook, and watching that process never gets old.

Part of the lasting appeal is the setting. I want to see that London, the gaslit streets, the hansom cabs, the cluttered rooms, and quiet corners where insight strikes. Doyle’s city feels alive, textured, and integral to the mysteries themselves.

These stories also inspire a kind of readerly aspiration. I wish I observed more. I wish I paid closer attention. Holmes reminds us that the world is full of clues, if only we slow down enough to see them.

Timeless, clever, and deeply comforting, this collection remains a masterclass in storytelling. Few literary companions reward return visits quite like Sherlock Holmes.
