A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

A former boxer gets bashed about in the search for the Black Dahlia killer.

A short summary:

The Black Dahlia follows Bucky Bleichert, a former boxer turned LAPD detective, whose life becomes entangled with one of the most infamous murders in American history. Assigned to investigate the brutal killing of Elizabeth Short, Bleichert is pulled into a violent, obsessive search that tests his body, his morality, and his grip on reality.

As the case deepens, the investigation exposes corruption, ambition, and the dark underbelly of postwar Los Angeles. Ellroy transforms a real-life crime into a relentless noir descent, where the pursuit of truth exacts a heavy toll, and innocence is long gone before the final blow lands.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Some people don't respond to civility."
- James Ellroy, The Black Dahlia

Questions to ponder while reading:

Does everyone have a secret agenda?

Is obsession ever helpful?

My review:

Noir. Tough guys. A murder, eventually, solved.

The Black Dahlia doesn’t ease you in. It batters forward with clipped prose, moral exhaustion, and a world where civility is a liability. Ellroy’s Los Angeles is all sharp elbows and sharp instincts, and Bucky’s journey is less about justice than endurance.

Buck up, it’s a marathon to the end. The violence, obsession, and emotional cost pile up, but that’s the point. This isn’t mystery as comfort; it’s noir as attrition. And somehow, despite the brutality, it’s wildly compelling.

Yes, it’s dark. Yes, it’s intense. And yes, it’s absolutely brain candy for noir lovers who want their fiction fast, dirty, and unforgiving.
