A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

A little girl's life in a family of secrets.

A short summary:

The Threshing of Straw tells the story of a young girl growing up inside a family bound tightly by silence, secrets, and quiet harm. Through a child’s eyes, everyday life unfolds against a backdrop of withheld truths, where love, fear, and loyalty tangle together, and nothing is ever said outright.

As the years pass, the weight of those unspoken realities presses harder, shaping identity and understanding in ways the child cannot yet name. The novel moves gently but relentlessly, revealing how the lies we tell to survive can become just as powerful as the truths we fear.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Secret? Lie? Maybe there really wasn't a difference."
- Kim Catron, Threshing of Straw

Questions to ponder while reading the book:

Do you trust your mother?

What secrets does your family have?

My review:

This is the kind of book that quietly takes hold and refuses to let go. The prose is accessible and absorbing, making it easy to fall into, but the emotional impact is anything but light. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down.

Catron captures the heartbreak of childhood betrayal and confusion with restraint rather than melodrama, which makes the story hit even harder. The emotional tension builds slowly, rooted in realism rather than shock, and the result is a deeply affecting reading experience.

A Threshing of Straw is a heartwrenching, immersive story, one that stays with you long after the final page. It’s perfect for readers who appreciate emotionally honest fiction and are prepared to sit with difficult truths for a while.
