Why Catholics do the things that Catholics do.

A short summary:

Signs of Life by Scott Hahn explores the meaning behind Catholic rites, rituals, and customs, answering a deceptively simple question: why do Catholics do what they do?

Hahn traces familiar practices, such as holy water, incense, vestments, gestures, and sacramentals, back to their biblical roots and early Christian usage. Rather than treating Catholic worship as a collection of arbitrary traditions, the book presents these actions as embodied theology: physical signs that point believers toward divine realities.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Thus, in Christ, all the things of the earth become signposts pointing us to God."

Questions to ponder while reading:

Why do you pray?

Have you ever thought about a pilgrimage?

My review:

Signs of Life is both informative and deeply affirming. Hahn has a gift for explaining complex theology in a way that feels natural, engaging, and even joyful. Each chapter unpacks not only what Catholics do, but why those actions matter, grounding worship firmly in scripture and sacred tradition.

The book is exceptionally well-researched and carefully documented, yet it never feels academic or dry. Hahn writes with the enthusiasm of a teacher who delights in discovery, guiding the reader through Catholic worship as a lived, sensory experience rather than a purely intellectual exercise.

What makes Signs of Life especially compelling is its tone. This is not a defensive apology for Catholicism, but an open-handed invitation to understand worship more deeply. It is an engaging and enjoyable walk through the rhythms of Catholic life, one that leaves the reader more attentive, more informed, and more grateful for the richness of liturgical practice.
