A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Graphic featuring Uncomfortable with Uncertainty by Pema Chödrön with the subtitle “A Short Summary and Review” over a soft, muted background.

Buddhist lessons in growth, taught by an American Nun.

A short summary:

Uncomfortable with Uncertainty is a compassionate and practical exploration of how to live well in a world that refuses to be predictable. Drawing from Buddhist teachings and her own experience as a Western nun, Pema Chödrön invites readers to stop seeking permanent security and instead learn how to stay present with fear, loss, and ambiguity. Through short teachings and reflections, she reframes uncertainty not as a problem to be solved, but as the very condition that makes growth, compassion, and awakening possible.

My favorite quote from the book:

"As long as we believe that there is  something that will permanently
satisfy our hunger for security, suffering is inevitable."
- Pema Chödrön, Comfortable with Uncertainty

Quote by Pema Chödrön reading “As long as we believe that something will permanently satisfy our hunger for security, suffering is inevitable,” over a soft, blurred background.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do you hide from your thoughts?

Where do you look for happiness?

My review:

This book offers gentle but piercing wisdom, delivered in a way that feels deeply human and accessible. Chödrön excels at translating Buddhist concepts, especially karma, suffering, and compassion, into language that resonates with modern life without diluting their meaning. Her explanation of karma as habit and momentum rather than punishment is particularly freeing. The book is easy to read in small portions, yet each teaching lingers, making it ideal for slow reflection or journaling. I found it both comforting and quietly challenging, the kind of book that meets you where you are and nudges you toward greater honesty and kindness.
