A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover of The Road Beyond Ruin by Gemma Liviero over an Italian countryside background with text indicating a short summary and review.
An Italian POW adopts a new life while trying to return home.

A short summary:

Set in the uncertain months following the end of World War II, The Road Beyond Ruin follows an Italian prisoner of war who survives the collapse of Fascist Italy only to find that victory does not bring clarity, safety, or an easy road home. Displaced by shifting borders, political suspicion, and sheer exhaustion, he adopts a fragile new identity while quietly navigating the long and often dangerous journey back toward the life he lost. Liviero focuses not on battlefield heroics, but on the liminal space after war — where survival becomes moral, psychological, and deeply personal.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Success can only come from patience and study. You cannot expect it from others."
-Gemma Liviero, The Road Beyond Ruin

Questions to ponder while reading:

Can you take care of another person if you have nothing?

Can you find sympathy for your enemy?

My review:

This novel does something many WWII stories overlook: it asks what comes after the parades end. Liviero captures the exhaustion, hunger, and fear that linger long after peace is declared, and reminds us that survival itself can be a daily act of courage. The story quietly reframes victory as something uneven and deeply human, especially for those on the losing side or caught between loyalties. I finished the book thinking less about triumph and more about endurance — about how unimaginably hard it must have been to simply keep going when the world had already burned itself out.
