A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Finding a killer Colonel after the death of the dancer.

A short summary:

The Man in the Brown Suit begins with the sudden death of a dancer and a cryptic clue that propels Anne Beddingfeld, curious, clever, and refreshingly fearless, into an international chase. What starts as a puzzle quickly becomes a pursuit of a shadowy figure known only as the “Colonel,” whose trail winds through intrigue, danger, and unexpected romance.

Christie blends mystery with adventure, allowing coincidence, courage, and charm to drive the plot. The result is a story less concerned with procedure than momentum, where wit and intuition matter just as much as deduction.

My favorite quote from the book:

"But there are many fools in the world.  One praises God for their existence and keeps out of their way."
- Agatha Christie, The Man in the Brown Suit

Questions to ponder while reading:

Are there any smells you just can't stand?

Do you mind your own business?

My review:

I always love a lighthearted mystery, and this one delivers.

Agatha Christie is a master not only of airtight puzzles, but of tone, and The Man in the Brown Suit sparkles with energy and humor. Anne Beddingfeld is an engaging protagonist, full of independence and curiosity, and the story moves at a brisk, delightful clip.

This isn’t Christie at her most cerebral; it’s Christie at her most playful. There’s danger, certainly, but also romance and whimsy woven throughout.

Beddingfeld is good, very good, but Poirot is still my favorite. Even so, this is a book to read and love, especially when you want mystery without heaviness.
