The sacrifice of the perfect gift.

A short summary:

The Gift of the Magi is a tender story about a young married couple, Della and Jim, who want nothing more than to give each other the perfect Christmas gift, despite having almost nothing to spare. Each quietly sacrifices their most treasured possession in order to honor the other, only to discover that love, generosity, and devotion carry far more weight than the gifts themselves. It’s a story about intention over outcome and love expressed through self-giving.

My favorite quote from the book:

"O all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest.
Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi."
- O. Henry, The Gift of the Magi

O. Henry quote about the wisdom of giving and receiving gifts, overlaid on a soft pink background with cherry blossoms.

Questions to ponder while reading:

What would you give up for someone you love?

What is your greatest treasure?

My review:

This is one of my favorite Christmas stories of all time, and it never loses its power no matter how many times I return to it. O. Henry captures the humility and quiet courage of love so simply and so honestly that it feels timeless. I sniffle every single time, not because it’s sad, but because it reminds me how rare and beautiful selfless love can be. It’s a story meant to be reread every season, like a small ritual of the heart.

I always revisit this story and A Christmas Carol each Christmas season.
