A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover of El Narco: Inside Mexico’s Criminal Insurgency by Ioan Grillo next to text reading “A Short Summary & Review” on a floral background.
The why behind the rise of the Mexican Cartels.

A short summary:

El Narco: Inside Mexico’s Criminal Insurgency examines the forces behind the rise of Mexican drug cartels, tracing how organized crime evolved into something closer to a sustained insurgency. Ioan Grillo explores the intersection of drug demand, corruption, weak institutions, weapons trafficking, and economic desperation that allowed cartels to gain power and territorial control.

Rather than focusing solely on violence, Grillo explains why, how, and how policy decisions, globalization, and prohibition helped transform criminal groups into parallel authorities capable of challenging the state itself. The result is a sobering portrait of a conflict shaped as much by international forces as by domestic ones.

My favorite quote from the book:

"The story of the rise of El Narco is also the story of Mexican journalist who
risk their lives to cover it."

Questions to ponder while reading:

How do we curb demand?

How do we bring justice?

My review:

This is an in-depth and deeply unsettling look at our crisis, not just Mexico’s. The violence described in El Narco is horrific, relentless, and impossible to dismiss, but the book’s real power lies in showing how interconnected responsibility truly is.

Grillo does not sensationalize the carnage. Instead, he documents it carefully, making clear that brutality is a feature of the system we have helped create, not an aberration. The book forces readers to confront uncomfortable truths about demand, enforcement, and the failures of current policy approaches.

El Narco is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand why the problem persists—and why simplistic solutions have repeatedly failed. It is rigorous, clear-eyed, and deeply troubling in the best, most necessary way.
