A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Hercule Poirot solves a murder with a twist.

A short summary:

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd finds Hercule Poirot newly retired to the quiet village of King’s Abbot—until a shocking death pulls him back into detection. When the wealthy Roger Ackroyd is murdered shortly after learning a devastating secret, Poirot is drawn into a web of village gossip, financial motives, and carefully concealed truths.

As he interviews neighbors, servants, and friends, Poirot demonstrates his unmatched ability to see significance in the seemingly mundane. Christie constructs a tightly controlled mystery where every detail matters and assumptions are constantly tested.

My favorite quote from the book:

"All the troubles in the world can be put down to money - or the lack of it."
- Agatha Christie, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

Questions to ponder while reading:

Is blackmail a practical profession?

Did you see that coming?

My review:

This is a fun, fun read, and a masterclass in mystery writing.

I love a good mystery, and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd delivers everything I want from the genre: clever plotting, memorable characters, and a pace that keeps the pages turning. Christie plays fair with the clues while still surprising even seasoned readers.

What makes this novel especially satisfying is its confidence. Christie trusts her audience enough to take risks, and the result is a story that feels fresh even after decades of discussion and rereading.

Agatha Christie remains a favorite for a reason. This book is entertaining, inventive, and endlessly rereadable, exactly what a great mystery should be.
