A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
The Old Man and the Sea is a deceptively simple story about an aging Cuban fisherman who finally hooks the great fish he has been waiting for, only to face an endurance test that pushes him beyond physical limits. Alone at sea, he battles not just the marlin but exhaustion, pain, pride, and the indifferent power of nature.
What follows is not a tale of triumph in the conventional sense. The struggle itself becomes the point, revealing dignity in persistence and meaning in effort, even when the outcome cannot be preserved.

My review:
This is my favorite fish tale, and not because of the fish.
Hemingway captures something essential about luck: how random it is, how little control we truly have over when it shows up, and how unfair it can feel when it does. Santiago does everything right. He works hard, he endures, he refuses to quit, and still, in the end, he loses what he fought for.
And yet, this never feels like a story about failure.
The Old Man and the Sea is about sticking with something even when you know you might lose, because the act of trying still matters. There is honor in persistence, grace in effort, and meaning in showing up day after day. Quiet, restrained, and deeply human, this is a story that lingers long after the last page.
