A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

The tale of a dauntless dystopia.

A short summary:

Set in a future Chicago divided into rigid factions, The Divergent Trilogy follows Tris Prior, a teenager who discovers she doesn’t fit neatly into any one category. In a society that prizes conformity and control, divergence is dangerous, and Tris’s refusal to be defined by a single trait puts her directly in the path of power struggles, rebellion, and surveillance.

As the trilogy unfolds, the story expands beyond faction rivalries to confront larger questions about identity, free will, and the cost of engineered peace. What begins as a coming-of-age survival story grows into a broader dystopian critique of systems that fear complexity.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Like a wild animal, the truth is too powerful to remain caged."
- Veronica Roth, The Divergent Trilogy

Questions to ponder while reading:

Could I have conformed to society?

Where do these super teenagers come from?

My review:

This trilogy is fun, and it knows it.

Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant are fast-paced, high-concept reads built for momentum. The action is constant, the stakes are personal, and the emotional beats land cleanly. It’s unapologetic brain candy, the kind of series you tear through without overthinking.

That said, there’s real satisfaction in the way it explores choice and resistance, even if the philosophy stays at a surface level. The series captures teen angst with sincerity, but I’ll admit I’m glad to be past that stage of life.

Still, for what it sets out to do, The Divergent Trilogy delivers: escapism, adrenaline, and a heroine who refuses to be simplified.
