A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
Set in the Jim Crow South, The Dry Grass of August is told through the eyes of Jubie Watts, a white child whose sheltered world is permanently altered after a brutal act of racial violence shatters her family. When Mary Luther, the family’s Black housekeeper, disappears following a town revival, Jubie is forced to confront truths her community refuses to acknowledge.
As Jubie begins to understand what has happened and what has been taken from her, her innocence gives way to painful awareness. The novel traces the moment when moral clarity begins to form, even when the surrounding world insists on silence, denial, and cruelty.

My review of the book:
This is a deeply engrossing and emotionally devastating novel. Mayhew captures the Jim Crow South with chilling clarity, not through spectacle, but through the everyday normalization of injustice and fear. The slow realization experienced by Jubie makes the story especially powerful, as readers are pulled into the gap between what a child senses and what adults refuse to say.
The prose is evocative without being overwrought, allowing the emotional weight of the story to emerge naturally. By focusing on relationships rather than ideology, the novel exposes the human cost of racial violence in an intimate, unforgettable way.
The Dry Grass of August tore my heart out. It’s a necessary, haunting read, one that lingers long after the final page and demands reflection rather than comfort.
