A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

The "depressing" trials and tribulations of Bertie Winslow.

A short summary:

All the Forgivenesses by Elizabeth Hardinger is a Depression-era novel that follows Bertie Winslow, a young woman whose life is defined by endurance, responsibility, and a relentless sense of duty. Set against the economic hardship of rural America, the story traces Bertie’s efforts to hold herself and those around her together while circumstances repeatedly test her resolve.

Rather than dramatic turns or grand gestures, the novel focuses on the quiet labor of survival: work done daily, obligations met without complaint, and sacrifices made without certainty of reward. Bertie’s life becomes a study in persistence, shaped by discipline and the unspoken belief that standing firm matters, even when hope feels thin.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Got to stand it or bust."

Questions to ponder while reading:

Have you ever felt betrayed by your mother?

Do you feel responsible for too many things?

My review:

All the Forgivenesses is engaging Depression-era historical fiction, the kind that draws strength from character rather than spectacle. While Bertie’s trials can feel heavy, the novel never loses its momentum; it’s a story built on forward motion, not despair.

What stayed with me most was Bertie herself. Her sense of responsibility and discipline is almost intimidating in its consistency. I found myself wishing I had even a fraction of her steadiness in the face of difficulty.

This is a grounded, quietly powerful read that honors the uncelebrated resilience of people who simply keep going. It’s not flashy, but it’s deeply satisfying.
