A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Brother Cadfael and the mystery of the murdered Baron.

A short summary:

The Leper of Saint Giles returns to twelfth-century Shrewsbury, where Brother Cadfael becomes entangled in the aftermath of a brutal crime involving a murdered baron and a young woman accused of the deed. As suspicion hardens into certainty around the most vulnerable, Cadfael quietly begins to ask better questions.

The investigation leads beyond the abbey walls into questions of inheritance, reputation, and mercy, revealing how fear and convenience can shape truth. Peters weaves historical detail and moral inquiry into a mystery where justice is as much about compassion as it is about proof.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Thinking is best after prayer, but will be none the worse for a meal and a glass of wine."
- Ellis Peters, The Leper of Saint Giles

Questions to ponder while reading:

Would you ever marry for money?

Have you ever considered the religious life?

My review:

Another great monk murder mystery, and a particularly thoughtful one.

Peters excels at balance here. The plot is well-woven and deliberate, never rushed, allowing relationships and motives to unfold naturally. Cadfael’s strength lies not in authority but in empathy, and this case leans heavily on his ability to see the humanity others overlook.

The story delivers several unexpected twists without becoming showy. Each turn feels earned, grounded in character rather than gimmick. What lingers most is the novel’s insistence that justice without mercy is incomplete.

This is a historical mystery at its best: intelligent, patient, and quietly moving.
