A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

The beautiful story of a baby in a bookstore.

A short summary:

A.J. Fikry is a prickly, grieving bookstore owner on a quiet island, barely keeping his shop and his heart open after personal loss. His life takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious package arrives at his store: a baby left behind with a note and no clear plan for the future.

What follows is the gradual transformation of a man who loves books far more easily than people. As A.J. raises a child among shelves and stories, the bookstore becomes a place of community, healing, and connection. Told in short, poignant chapters anchored by literary references, the novel unfolds as a gentle meditation on love, loss, and the ways stories shape who we become.

My favorite quote from the book:

"She is seventy, and she believes you try new things or you may as well die."

Questions to ponder while reading:

What do you do when you lose someone you love?

What is your favorite book?

My review:

What’s not to love? This is a book about a book lover, in a bookstore, saved, slowly and imperfectly, by connection. The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry is warm, witty, and deeply kind to its characters, even when they are stubborn, awkward, or grieving.

The story radiates comfort without feeling shallow. Gabrielle Zevin balances humor and tenderness with an understanding that healing doesn’t arrive all at once; it sneaks in through shared meals, small kindnesses, and bedtime stories read aloud. The love of books here isn’t decorative; it’s foundational. Literature becomes both a refuge and a bridge, linking characters who might otherwise never meet.

This is very much a “front of the fire” read: cozy, feel-good, and quietly affirming. It doesn’t ask the reader to wrestle with darkness so much as to believe that joy can re-enter life after loss.

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry is a reminder that stories, and people, are often better when we give them another chapter.
