A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover and review graphic for The Rescue by Steven Konkoly, a fast-paced military action thriller.
A fact-finding mission after a mission failure.

A short summary of The Rescue:

After a mission collapses under catastrophic circumstances, the response is not immediate retaliation—but investigation. The Rescue follows a high-stakes fact-finding operation tasked with uncovering what went wrong and determining whether anyone can still be saved.

As the inquiry pushes deeper into hostile territory, the line between investigation and survival disappears. New threats emerge, assumptions unravel, and the mission's scope expands far beyond its original mandate. What began as damage control quickly transforms into an all-out race against time, driven by loyalty, resolve, and the refusal to leave anyone behind.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Dead is dead. It doesn't matter how you get there."
- Steven Konkoly, The Rescue

Quote from The Rescue by Steven Konkoly reading “Dead is dead. It doesn’t matter how you get there.”

Questions to ponder while reading:

Have you ever misplaced your trust?

Can you misread a situation?

My review:

This is a fast, high-octane military thriller that knows exactly what it wants to be.

Steven Konkoly delivers relentless pacing, cinematic action, and an unapologetically bold approach to suspense. The plot moves quickly, stacking set pieces and near-impossible scenarios without lingering too long on realism.

Is it believable? Not entirely.
Is it entertaining? Absolutely.

The Rescue thrives on forward motion, fanciful, over-the-top, and packed with action that dares the reader to keep up. It’s the kind of book you read for adrenaline, not plausibility, and it fully commits to that promise.

A fun, thrilling ride for readers who like their action loud, fast, and unrestrained.
