A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
When Tom Wingo travels north to help doctors understand his twin sister Savannah’s violent mental breakdown, he expects to act as translator, not participant. But recounting their shared childhood in South Carolina forces Tom to confront the layers of silence, abuse, loyalty, and denial that shaped them both.
As memories surface, the novel becomes less about diagnosis and more about reckoning. Through Tom’s voice, Conroy explores how family myths protect the present while poisoning the future, and how truth, however late, demands to be spoken before healing can begin.

My review:
Dysfunction makes for good stories, not happy ones, and The Prince of Tides understands this deeply.
Conroy writes with an intensity that refuses to soften pain for the reader’s comfort. The book argues that family secrets are not protective; they are corrosive. What is hidden doesn’t disappear; it waits, gathering force.
Tom’s journey shows how the past does not stay contained. It haunts, revisits, and reshapes the present until acknowledged. While the novel is heavy and often uncomfortable, it is also cathartic, reminding us that survival without truth is merely endurance.
This is not an easy read, but it is a necessary one.
