A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover of The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien set against a verdant, mythic Middle-earth inspired background.
The mythology of Middle-earth.

A short summary:

The Silmarillion is the foundational mythology of Middle-earth, tracing its creation, its gods, its heroes, and its catastrophes long before The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings. Structured like an epic chronicle rather than a traditional novel, the book unfolds the great themes of Tolkien’s world: creation and corruption, light and loss, pride and perseverance.

From the Music of the Ainur to the tragic beauty of the Silmarils themselves, the stories read like sacred texts of an imagined civilization. This is not a tale meant to rush—it is meant to be entered carefully, like a cavern system whose depth reveals itself slowly, layer by layer.

My favorite quote from the book:

"For if joyful is the fountain that rises in the sun, its springs are in the wells of sorrow unfathomable at the foundations of the Earth."
- JRR Tolkien

Inspirational quote by J.R.R. Tolkien over a green, textured fantasy landscape background.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Is there creation in music?

Does knowing the mythology strengthen the story?

My review:

Reading The Silmarillion feels like spelunking into Middle-earth.

This is not an easy book, nor is it intended to be. It demands attention, patience, and a willingness to be immersed rather than entertained in the usual sense. But for readers who love Tolkien’s world, the reward is immense: a deeper understanding of the histories, heartbreaks, and lingering echoes that shape everything that comes later.

And yes, I have always wanted a Star Cake. Tolkien’s ability to make even mythic objects feel tangible, luminous, and quietly devastating is unmatched.

Can anyone truly get enough of  J.R.R. Tolkien’s world? This book answers that question by showing just how vast, ancient, and achingly beautiful it really is.
