A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover and review graphic for The Short Drop by Matthew FitzSimmons, a suspense thriller about a decade-long disappearance.
The resolution to a decade-long disappearance.

A short summary:

A decade after a young man vanishes without a trace, long-buried secrets begin to surface. What appears to be a cold case tied to privilege, power, and political ambition slowly unravels into something far more dangerous.

As investigators close in on the truth, connections between the disappearance and elite institutions come into focus. The past refuses to stay contained, and every revelation raises the stakes. The Short Drop is a tightly constructed thriller that exposes how far people will go to protect status, and how expensive that protection can become.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Entitlement breeds laziness, which in turn breeds decline."
- Matthew Fitzsimmons, The Short Drop

Quote from The Short Drop by Matthew FitzSimmons reading “Entitlement breeds laziness, which in turn breeds decline,” set over a monochrome crowd background.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Why do we allow things to haunt us?

Why are politics so tainted?

My review:

This was edge-of-your-seat reading from start to finish.

Matthew FitzSimmons delivers a suspense-driven thriller that wastes no time getting to the point and never lets up once it does. The pacing is sharp, the tension sustained, and the plot unfolds with a confidence that keeps the reader guessing.

It’s suspenseful without being convoluted and serious without sacrificing fun. Every chapter pushes the story forward, making it difficult to stop “just one more page.”

A smart, fast thriller that balances intrigue, momentum, and payoff, and is a thoroughly entertaining read.
