A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Paris café setting featuring the book cover of A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway with text reading “A Short Summary and Review.”
The tale of the Lost Generation in Paris.

A short summary:

A Moveable Feast is Ernest Hemingway’s memoir of his early years in 1920s Paris, when he was young, poor, and determined to become a writer. Set among cafés, rented rooms, and long walks along the Seine, the book captures the spirit of the Lost Generation, writers and artists learning their craft while living intensely and frugally.

Hemingway reflects on friendships with fellow expatriates, the discipline of daily writing, and the belief that good work could be forged through attention, hunger, and persistence. Paris becomes both a place and a mindset: a city that teaches you how to see, how to simplify, and how to keep going.

This is a memoir less about achievement than about apprenticeship.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Hunger is good discipline."
- Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast

Blue-toned graphic with a Paris café scene and a quote by Ernest Hemingway reading, “Hunger is good discipline.”

Questions to ponder while reading:

Could I possibly drink that much wine without keeling over?

Is anyone really that manly?

My review:

I want to visit Paris, the one with café tables, cheap wine, notebooks, and conversations that stretch late into the night. Hemingway’s Paris feels intimate and human, not glamorous for show but alive with possibility.

I also wish I could have met Hemingway at this stage of his life: earnest, observant, and still discovering who he might become. His emphasis on discipline, on showing up, writing plainly, and cutting away excess—feels especially resonant.

And yes, I laughed at myself, wondering"Is wine considered alcohol?" In this book, it feels more like a companion to thought than indulgence. Wine, bread, and conversation are part of the texture of a life devoted to paying attention.

A Moveable Feast is warm, reflective, and quietly instructive. It makes you want to write better, walk more, and believe that places can shape who we are.
