A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
Set in a shadow-soaked Barcelona, The Angel’s Game follows David Martín, a young writer clawing his way out of poverty through words. When a mysterious publisher offers him an extraordinary contract—to write a book unlike any other, the promise of security and recognition is irresistible.
But the contract comes with unsettling conditions, and its benefactor, the enigmatic Corelli, seems to know far more about David than he should. As the lines between fiction, obsession, and faith begin to blur, David finds himself drawn into a labyrinth of secrets where stories carry dangerous power and authorship comes at a terrible price.

My review:
This book made me want to go to Barcelona immediately.
Carlos Ruiz Zafón writes the city as a living, breathing presence, foggy streets, hidden libraries, and decaying grandeur wrapped around a story that is equal parts literary mystery and Gothic nightmare. If The Shadow of the Wind was a love letter to books, The Angel’s Game is a warning about them.
Corelli is, without question, deeply suspicious.
The writing contract is profoundly unsettling.
And the entire novel hums with the dangerous allure of creation.
I kept finding myself wondering: Where does one sign up to write a book like this? Zafón captures the intoxication of storytelling—the way it consumes, transforms, and occasionally destroys the people who give themselves to it.
Dark, atmospheric, and deliciously meta, this is a haunting meditation on art, ambition, and the price of believing in stories too much.
