A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A nun takes on a man with a gun to save a Bundagugli mission.
A short summary:
The Sisters of the Southern Cross by Jean Grainger follows Sister Claire, a determined and unconventional nun stationed at a remote Bundagugli mission in Australia. When violence threatens the mission and the vulnerable people it serves, Sister Claire is forced into a confrontation that tests her faith, courage, and resolve. Set against the harsh beauty and relentless heat of the Australian outback, the novel blends suspense, humor, and heart as it explores what it means to live out Christian conviction in dangerous and unexpected circumstances.
My favorite quote from the book:
"Surely the people could embrace the Christian message without having their culture annihilated at the same time."
Jean Grainger, Sisters of the Southern Cross
Questions to ponder while reading:
Are you who you say you are?
What is your vocation?
My review:
This was a highly entertaining and genuinely fun read, anchored by Sister Claire, who is a strong, memorable character with grit, wit, and moral clarity. Jean Grainger balances tension with warmth, making the story engaging without ever losing its sense of purpose. The setting adds both atmosphere and realism. I could practically feel the heat and dust, and I admired how the book tackled serious stakes while remaining approachable and enjoyable. That said, I’m fairly certain I could not survive wearing a habit in that climate, which only deepened my respect for the characters who do.
