A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

The Last Battle is About to Begin

A short summary:

The Gathering Storm, the twelfth installment of The Wheel of Time, marks the long-anticipated tightening of the Pattern as the forces of Light and Shadow converge toward Tarmon Gai’don. Rand al’Thor wrestles with the crushing weight of prophecy and power, walking an increasingly perilous path as he prepares the world for the Last Battle. Meanwhile, Egwene al’Vere, imprisoned within the White Tower, quietly wages her own internal war, challenging division and corruption from within. As alliances strain and darkness gathers, both leaders move inexorably toward pivotal transformations, signaling that the final confrontation is no longer distant; it has begun.

My favorite quote:

"The more power a man held, the more likely he was to be an idiot with it."
- Robert Jordan (Brandon Sanderson), The Gathering Storm

Fantasy-style illustration of a cloaked figure standing on a rocky cliff beneath swirling storm clouds, paired with the quote: “The more power a man held, the more likely he was to be an idiot with it” by Robert Jordan (Brandon Sanderson).

Questions to ponder while reading:

Is it ever right to use a wrong?

Have you ever taken advantage of a loophole?

My review:

Finishing Book 12 felt like crossing a threshold, one of those rare reading moments when you can feel the story shifting toward its inevitable end. I was genuinely saddened to be reminded that Robert Jordan passed away before completing the series, yet I found The Gathering Storm reassuring in its continuity. Brandon Sanderson steps in with deep respect for Jordan’s world, bringing a steady hand to the narrative and a sense of momentum that had been building for years. The emotional weight of Rand’s unraveling and Egwene’s extraordinary resilience made this volume particularly satisfying, and by the final pages, I felt that familiar mix of urgency and anticipation. The Last Battle is coming, and the Wheel is turning exactly as it should.
