Telling the tale of the little things that snowballed.

A short summary:

Tiny Blunders, Big Disasters by Jared Knott explores the small mistakes, overlooked decisions, and moments of human error that unexpectedly altered the course of history. From military miscalculations to political failures and simple bad luck, the book examines how seemingly minor events sometimes triggered enormous consequences.

Blending historical storytelling with “what if” speculation, Knott invites readers to consider how fragile historical outcomes can be. The result is an engaging look at the chain reactions that shape nations, wars, discoveries, and disasters.

My favorite quote from the book:

"It is much easier to do the right thing when you have no other choice."

Questions to ponder while reading:

Have you ever wondered how the world could have been different?

Do you believe in fate?

My review:

Tiny Blunders, Big Disasters is one of those history books that constantly makes you stop and think, “What if that one thing had happened differently?” Jared Knott focuses on the moments history almost took another path — the little errors, bad assumptions, and split-second decisions that snowballed into massive consequences.

What makes the book entertaining is how approachable it feels. Rather than getting bogged down in heavy academic detail, Knott keeps the stories moving quickly and focuses on the human side of history: people making imperfect choices under pressure. Some of the mistakes are shocking in hindsight, while others feel almost absurdly small considering how much was followed afterward.

The book also does a good job of highlighting how unpredictable history really is. We tend to think major events were inevitable, but Tiny Blunders, Big Disasters repeatedly shows how fragile outcomes can be. A delayed message, a misunderstood order, a poor assumption, or a single act of hesitation can completely reshape the future.

I found it a fun and thought-provoking read. It is well researched, highly entertaining, and full of those fascinating “would have, could have, should have” moments that make history feel alive. By the end, you come away realizing just how different the world might look today if a few tiny details had changed.
