A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
The tale of a grandmother's tragedy in India.
A short summary:
The Storyteller’s Secret follows the intertwined lives of generations of women, anchored by a grandmother whose life in India was shaped by love, loss, and an unspoken tragedy. As her story unfolds, the novel moves between past and present, revealing how grief, silence, and resilience echo through families long after the original wounds were formed. It is a quiet, emotional exploration of how stories are carried, hidden, and eventually shared, and how telling them can become an act of healing.
My favorite quote from the book:
"Maybe today, in helping to ease others pain, you ease a little of your own."
Sejal Bandani, The Storyteller's Secret
Questions to ponder:
How have traditions dictated your life?
Have you ever felt cursed?
My review:
This novel is a reminder that family stories are often the most powerful, even when they are painful. Badani doesn’t shy away from sorrow or injustice, and not all of the stories here are easy to read, but they feel honest and necessary. What stayed with me most was the sense that survival itself can be an inheritance. Despite the heaviness of its themes, the book ultimately left me hopeful. I was sad while reading it, but I was also grateful by the end, and yes, quietly happy too.
