A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Learning to live with God.

A short summary of With:

With by Skye Jethani reframes the spiritual life around one central idea: God’s deepest desire is not that we live for, over, under, or from Him, but with Him.

Jethani explores how many Christians, often unintentionally, distort their relationship with God into one of performance, control, fear, or transactional dependence. Through scripture, theology, and lived experience, he invites readers to rediscover a faith rooted in communion, walking alongside God in trust, humility, and shared life rather than striving or self-protection.

My favorite quote from the book:

"No condition of life is more honorable than another because nothing God does lacks value."
- Skye Jethani, With

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do you grasp or embrace?

What is your mission?

My review:

With is a powerful perspective changer. It gently but firmly challenges assumptions about faith that can quietly erode peace and distort purpose. Jethani’s writing is clear and accessible yet deeply reflective, making this a book that meets readers wherever they are.

What stands out most is the clarity it offers in God's relationships. Rather than framing faith as a system to manage or a burden to carry, With restores the idea of companionship with God, one that dignifies ordinary life and honors human vulnerability. It offers a vision of faith that is neither passive nor anxious, but rooted in trust and presence.

This book is an excellent reminder of purpose, especially for those who feel exhausted by striving or uncertain about their spiritual posture. It is a work to return to when faith begins to feel transactional rather than relational, and a meaningful guide for re-centering life around communion rather than control.
