A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Ivy's summer before her senior year, as it was ruined by her mother's reemergence.

A short summary:

Wild Swans by Jessica Spotswood follows Ivy, a teenager on the cusp of her senior year, whose carefully imagined summer unravels when her estranged mother unexpectedly reenters her life. What should have been a season of freedom, friendships, and transition becomes complicated by old wounds and unresolved family trauma.

As Ivy navigates shifting relationships, first independence, and the uncomfortable return of a parent who has already failed her once, the novel explores how children are often forced to grow up faster than they should. The story balances the sweetness of adolescence with the weight of disappointment, asking what it really means to come of age when stability is never guaranteed.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Everybody freaks out at some point. It's how you patch yourself up that matters."
- Jessica Spotswood, Wild Swans

Quote reading “Everybody breaks out at some point. It’s how you patch yourself up that matters.” by Jessica Spotswood over a pink water-textured background.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do you feel restrained by your life?

Are you angry with your mother?

My review:

Wild Swans is an engaging and approachable coming-of-age novel, easy to sink into and emotionally resonant. It works especially well as a relaxed read, the kind of book that fits perfectly into a quiet, lazy afternoon.

At the heart of the story, though, is a painful family dynamic. Ivy’s mother is deeply frustrating, and the damage she causes casts a long shadow over the novel. That tragedy grounds the book, keeping it from drifting into sentimentality.

Despite the heaviness of that relationship, the story remains hopeful and sincere. It’s a thoughtful reminder that growing up often means learning how to patch yourself together, even when the people meant to protect you don’t.
