St. Catherine of Siena explores a saint whose understanding of freedom begins not with external circumstances, but with radical self-knowledge. Through Catherine’s visions, letters, and spiritual teachings, we encounter a theology rooted in honesty about God, love, and the human soul. Her insistence that true freedom comes from knowing oneself in the light of God challenges both spiritual complacency and fear. This is not a quiet or passive holiness; it is a fierce, discerning interior freedom that fuels action, courage, and love in the world.

My review:

This book offers a compelling portrait of a passionate, intellectually rigorous saint whose faith was anything but timid. Catherine’s intensity makes you want to read more of her own words—not just about God, but about the discipline of self-examination and responsibility. There is something deeply unsettling (and deeply inviting) about her insistence that ignorance of oneself is a form of bondage. By the end, you’re not only curious about Catherine’s mystical writings, you’re also prompted to turn inward, to ask harder questions about your own freedom, motivations, and loves.
