A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
Bringing the light of love to the darkest corner of the universe and defeating it in the process.
A short summary:
In A Wrinkle in Time, Madeleine L’Engle sweeps readers into a cosmic battle between light and darkness as Meg Murray, her brilliant brother Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin journey through space in search of Meg’s missing father. Guided by Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which, the children discover that the universe is threatened by a great shadow, an embodiment of fear, conformity, and despair. To save her father, and ultimately the world, Meg must rely on the one power the darkness can’t duplicate: the fierce, unyielding love of the human heart.
My quote:
"Life, with its rules, its obligations, and its freedoms, is like a sonnet. You're given the form, but you have to write the sonnet yourself."
-Madeline L'Engle, A Wrinkle in Time
Questions to ponder while reading:
How many problems has overconfidence caused you?
Does love conquer all?
My review:
Rereading this book reminded me why Meg meant so much to me the first time around. Her awkwardness, her temper, her stubborn loyalty, all of it felt so real that I instantly connected with her. A Wrinkle in Time was one of the first books that made me want to become a scientist… right up until I realized how much math that dream required. Even so, the wonder L’Engle created stayed with me. The fact that it has been challenged and banned over the years only makes me love it more. Be a rebel and read the book that tells you love is stronger than darkness.
