A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
The Heidi Chronicles follows Heidi Holland from the 1960s through the late 1980s as she comes of age alongside second-wave feminism. Through friendships, relationships, and professional milestones, Heidi navigates shifting cultural expectations, personal ambition, and the uneasy space between independence and belonging.
Told episodically, the play charts how ideals evolve over time, how youthful certainty gives way to compromise, reflection, and quiet resilience. As Heidi watches the feminist movement change, fragment, and commercialize, she is forced to ask not only what it has achieved, but also what it has cost the women who believed in it.

My review:
Deep subjects require humor, and Wendy Wasserstein understands that truth instinctively.
The Heidi Chronicles is funny, sharp, and deceptively gentle. Its humor doesn’t deflect pain; it makes space for it. Heidi’s wit, intelligence, and self-awareness are part armor, part survival skill, allowing the play to ask difficult questions without turning bitter or didactic.
I wish I were as witty, but more than that, I admire Heidi’s honesty. The play refuses tidy resolutions. Success doesn’t guarantee fulfillment. Independence doesn’t erase loneliness. And progress doesn’t always feel like victory from the inside.
What lingers is the play’s insistence on authenticity. Be true to yourself, even when the culture shifts, even when friendships fracture, even when the script for a “successful life” no longer fits. The Heidi Chronicles remains relevant because it tells the truth softly and trusts the audience to listen.
